A Letter of Thanks and Appeal from the Finance Committee
The Federated Church of Green Lake
All of us have or know of family and friends who, through no fault of their own, have quietly carried a financial and emotional burden of a lost job, depleted savings, and increasing medical costs in what has become a major global economic recession. During this time, our Church, congregation and pastoral staff have reached out to those in need.
As a congregation, we are truly blessed. In January of this year, we collectively voted on and approved an operating budget. For much of 2009 we have remained within this budget whereas many other churches and charities have struggled. Our relative stability is in no small part due to your prayers, generosity and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We are an extremely generous congregation. From Helping Hearts to Prayers and Squares, from Christian Education to Missions here and abroad, we continue to support the missions that make our Church a unique and wonderful community in Christ.
Like so many of our friends and our community as a whole, however, we are not immune to the current economic reality. As of the end of September, total giving (while above where we were last year at this time) is currently behind where we budgeted.
As we look to the end of 2009 and projections for the 2010 budget, it becomes increasingly difficult to continue and expand our outreach. In fact, it is times like these that our members, and our community, need more from our Church - not less. In most cases, these services are directly tied to financial support. In past years, we have bridged gaps in our projected expenses and giving with fund raising opportunities such as the Harvest Fest chicken bar-b-que and Clutter-Free Christmas sale. We appeal to the congregation for ideas on ways that the Church can raise additional funds to support the mission that is Federated Church. We know there are great ideas waiting to be heard! If you have ideas, please feel free to contact a member of the Finance Committee or Church Council.
Additionally, now is the time for those of us who fully intend, but have unintentionally slipped, to contribute.
For those of us who are blessed with the ability and guided by the Holy Spirit to do so, your additional efforts would be in order. For those of you who are in need, there is no reason to bear that burden on your own and we encourage you to reach out to the Church and each other.
Many in our church are already carrying significant burdens and we struggle with asking for additional funds, but we would be in error not to share the reality of our financial status with everyone. We are, however, asking for solutions. We need each other to function for each other.
